Understanding the everyday experiences of data

About Us

Quotidian Data (QD) is a research institute focused on advancing understanding of the socio-technical layers of knowledge production and stewardship especially related to data.

We are a Kenyan non-for-profit think tank headquartered in Nairobi with an office in San Francisco.

We are working towards a future where AI and data technologies are co-designed, developed, and governed in and by the places and people targeted. We are interested in data processes that restore, renew and revitalize communities’ own resources of knowledge, energy and materials, supporting them to be more resilient to economic and environmental shocks.

Research

To identify appropriate data norms, technologies and practices through research and experimental building of new socio-technical platforms and processes

Advisory

To support the implementation and advocate for uptake of better data technologies, practices and policies

Collaboration

To influence and facilitate collaboration amongst the many actors, institutions, technologies, and frameworks that contribute to global, interdisciplinary systems of data

Work

Data Governance

  • Best practices around production, usage and sharing of data
  • Digital identities and representations of humans emerging as data points for service access delivery

Decolonial AI and Algorithims

  • Potential and risks of AI in dismantling or further entrenching extractive scientific activities from marginalized places
  • Potential of AI to better connect human, natural and built systems in mutually beneficial ways
